Private immigration detention doesn’t get a lot of attention — but it should. I went to Colorado on a tip that detainees at the Aurora ICE Processing Center have been facing harsh conditions there. It was a sobering experience to speak with them face to face. Perhaps what’s even more striking though, is just how our U.S. immigration systems and processes works. . . I hope you’ll watch this story and hear from some of the migrants and undocumented individuals whose voices and stories are so easily hidden, forgotten or unheard — and learn about the state of private immigration detention facilities in the US. “Given the socioeconomic disparities that exist in our country, it’s harder for people of color to get the access and training in this field. It’s hard — not impossible — but it is very hard. The expectation of unpaid media internships for students means aspiring student journalists have to work upwards of three jobs and overload on credits to get through school early or on-time, pay for bills, and gain media experience. So yes, more [women] should think of joining this field, and we should remember the reasons it may be difficult for certain communities to enter it.” . . . . . Every time I speak with my grandma in Uganda, or get the chance to sit with my parents, I’m reminded of humble beginnings, and that our existence really is resistance. Against all odds.
