A true joy to finally meet and sit down with @iamishasesay ✨ Isha’s commitment to her stories and skill in her craft is undeniable. Last night I joined @womenforwomen to moderate a discussion about Isha’s powerful book, Beneath the Tamarind Tree: A Story of Courage, Family, and the Lost School Girls of Boko Haram. The book details just what happened to those 276 Chibok schoolgirls in Nigeria who were kidnapped by Boko Haram, the #BringBackOurGirls movement that followed, why their kidnapping was initially and falsely deemed a hoax, and the ‘ripple effect’ that follows the education of a girl.
a year ago, I spent this week with my grandma — wandering through the trees, sipping tea, sitting in the grass. this year she’s an ocean away, and I’m here. often life brings and creates its own distances. some physical, some societal, some spiritual. this week, i’m giving thanks for simple love, often experienced in the in-between moments of life and relationships. a love that can be felt near and far, amplified by gratitude. i’m thankful.
